No data in an answer

Diagnose empty, unavailable or permission-scoped results from connected sources and fix the real cause.

· OpenbirdAI documentation

An empty answer is a signal, not a verdict. It almost always means one specific gate did not open. This page walks the gates in the order the request encounters them.

Walk the gates

  1. Sources list empty → retrieval never ran. Check the workspace and connection status.
  2. Sources present, content empty → wrong account, wrong period, or a filter that excluded everything.
  3. Permission error → the scope is missing or the account cannot access the record.
  4. Works for someone else → different workspace or different connected account.

Most common causes

  • Wrong workspace — the connection lives in another workspace.
  • Wrong account connected — the data belongs to a different account than the one authorised.
  • Date range excludes the data — relative phrases resolve strictly.
  • Sharing rules — a file you cannot open in the provider cannot be read by OpenbirdAI.
  • Service not exposed — the connected account does not have that service, such as Analytics on a personal account.
  • Provider sync lag — the provider exposes synced rather than live data.

Proving the connection works

text
"List the five most recently modified items you can see in <service>."

If this returns nothing, the connection is not usable for that service. If it returns items, your original question is scoped too narrowly.

Asking OpenFeather to help you diagnose

OpenFeather can often narrow the problem itself, because it knows which stage of the request failed.

text
"Did you read any sources for that answer? If not, tell me which gate failed."
"What would need to be connected or authorised for this question to work?"

A useful reply names the failing gate. A reply that guesses at data is itself the signal that retrieval did not run.

When it is correct behaviour

Sometimes there genuinely is no data in range, or the record is not accessible to the connected account, and OpenFeather says so instead of inventing an answer. That is the intended behaviour — prefer a verified empty result to a plausible fabrication.

Common questions

Why does a general question work but a data question not?

General questions need no authorisation. Data questions do, so they fail when a gate is closed.

Does an empty answer mean the source has no data?

No. It means the request could not reach it, or reached it with a scope that excluded the records.
